Last night was the night many fans had been waiting for with baited breath, the release of the long awaited Deadpool movie. Now I myself am by no means a rabid movie fan. I stick to my favorite franchises and usually cant even tell you what is showing on the circuit at any given time. As such I went into the cinema with no real expectations or even any prior knowledge of who or what Deadpool was. The first 20 minutes of this movie changed all that.
Deadpool started out as a regular guy who gains his powers later in life (I’ll leave you to find out how by watching the movie). His main mission being to seek revenge on his enemies and reunite with his love. I wont give away any spoilers, but just know that this is not the traditional superhero “save the girl” kind of story. It’s a real rough ride of violence and laughs that will have you cringing, laughing, and on the edge of your seat all at the same time.
From the get go the movie catapults one into a beautiful symphony of dark and violent humor that doesn’t let up until the very last frame. The fight scenes are so deeply satisfying and almost Kill Bill like. There’s something really sweet about watching bad guys get torn apart by a guy in a red suit that is just hard to explain (it is worth noting that like Kill Bill, this movie is obviously not for the little ones or the faint of heart). There is a grittiness to this movie that I really loved. Foul language and blood… Something missing in most superhero movies. I felt this added a sense of “realness” to go with the fantasy element.
The darkness of Deadpool’s personal story was also a really refreshing change. There is a girl involved, but their story is by no means a fairy tale. It is no cheesy “boy meets girl but doesn’t notice him until he takes off his mask and kisses her upside down” kind of story. It is a story that will pull you in and I felt it really connected me to the main character.
Deadpool is dirty, foul mouthed and breaks all the rules of what a Hero should be. He seeks revenge, violently disposes of his rivals and captivates the audience with his naughty wit and humor. If you don’t like Super Hero movies, Deadpool might just be the Anti Hero for you.
I give this movie a solid 9/10. Go watch it now!
