Having a website is great. Having a site that works for you is even better. Before I write a single line of code, or design any wireframes in Photoshop, the client and I need to come together on the end vision of the project. You wouldn’t serve fillet mignon to a vegetarian, would you? So why serve the wrong type of website to your target audience?
Things to consider (from a client’s point of view) in the planning phase of the project:
Who are your existing customers?
These are people who have already found your product or service and have liked it enough to spend money on it. The goal of your website is to attract more of these people so your business will grow.
What makes your product/service unique?
Every business has a personality of its own, and a website must get that personality across by using design, copy (the text on the site) and images. A good site won’t simply let customers know what you offer, but who you are as well.
Are there any specific problems you are hoping to solve with your website?
Perhaps you are inundated with calls from areas you don’t cater to. Getting phone calls from people in Durban when you are based in George isn’t very helpful… This is a perfect problem that a website can solve. Leads can be filtered and lots of time can be saved by clearly stating where you are based, your contact details, operating hours and, if applicable; products, prices, stock levels etc. Think of your website as an extra employee who can handle all of these queries.
Budget constraints aside, what is your “Dream Website”?
We aren’t all lucky enough to afford major custom web development, but that could change somewhere down the line! Building a site with growth in mind is key. Features can always be added as needed, and the basic site you start with could eventually grow into a multi-million rand ecommerce giant! Think for the future but act for the present.
The importance having a decent website in this day and age cannot be emphasized enough. A good site will grow with your business, build brand awareness and provide your customers with a reason to keep coming back!
